Safely diverting food waste to impact food disparity.

Stew Of Sustainability™️ helps coordinate the collection and transportation of food surplus from local companies to area soup kitchens. It utilizes an innovative process created by Dr. Benjamin Chapman, a food safety expert at North Carolina State University, for the proper cooking, cooling, packaging, and freezing of prepared foods for future use, safely and easily.

“At Stew Of Sustainability™️, we work to make a measurable difference in the fight against hunger,” said Tom McKernan, founder. “By working with a range of food service providers, we help create and distribute bulk meals or stew components for soup kitchens throughout Charlotte.”

Our vision is to promote a program that enables food service providers to take pre-consumer, excess food that is still wholesome food or fit grocery products and create nutritious bulk foods or stew components that can be properly frozen. Once frozen in specialized bags that offer a longer shelf life, and accurately labeled and recorded to health standard guidelines, these foods can be given to soup kitchens to feed the hungry and homeless. By utilizing specific, approved food safety-based standard operating procedures, food service providers can now take food items that are sometimes disposed of and easily create one-, two- or three-gallon bags of cooked food for those in need.

Please note that we are not a non-profit and are not seeking monetary donations for this program. We are seeking several new participants to utilize the Stew Of Sustainability™️ food rescue for donation method. This program has provided our existing partners with the equipment, packaging, and labeling needed free of charge and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Please visit our partners page to see how you and your organization can get involved.

“The massive amount of food the team has prepared for us through the Stew of Sustainability™️ food program has been critical in allowing us to provide warm, nutritious meals every single day.”
